(MEDICARE WRAP-UP) Enter 2010: Some Good, Some Not So Good Health Coverage News
Each New Year brings changes to the American health care system, not all of which help health care consumers. 2010 is no exception. This year, in an attempt to mitigate potential harm, Congress attached provisions to the Department of Defense Appropriations Act of 2010 that extend, at least temporarily, some existing laws affecting Medicare beneficiaries, low-income individuals, and unemployed workers. (SENATE) Senate Must Soon Take up House-Passed Jobs Bill, Stimulus
When the Senate returns to work early next month, it will be forced to consider a $154 billion jobs creation and public infrastructure package the House passed in the waning days of the 2009 legislative session. The bill -- the Jobs for Main Street Act (HR 2847) -- includes a $750 million competitive grants program for those who offer job training in high-growth green industries. Login to see complete story

(GRANTS) Agency Moving Quickly on Social Innovation Solicitation
(Comment Deadline: Jan. 15) The federal government's Corporation for National & Community Service (CNCS) is in a hurry to award $50 million in funding for its new Social Innovation Fund (SIF), staffers tell us. The omnibus law (PL 111-117) just created the measure the week before Christmas, but CNCS already is offering the proposed funding solicitation. Only 18 days are allotted to comment -- the comment deadline is Jan. 15.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) in 2006 created the "Point-of-Sale Facilitated Enrollment" (POS) process, administered by WellPoint. The purpose of the POS is to assist people who are dually eligible for Medicare and Medicaid (a.k.a., dual eligibles) in filling their prescriptions at the pharmacy if they have not yet been assigned to a Part D prescription drug plan. Beginning today (Jan 1), the POS process will be enhanced by a new process for providing retroactive and temporary drug coverage for all Low-Income Subsidy eligible individuals.
