(WORKFORCE) June Employment Data Show Older Workers Taking a Beating
The unemployment rate for the total labor force rose very slightly in June to 9.5% from 9.4% in May; 14.7 million people -- or 218,000 more than in May -- reported that they were out of work and looking for a job; this was a substantially smaller increase than the month before. The average cost to live in a Denver-area nursing home in a semi-private room for one year in Colorado is $66,527. For the percentage of nursing home residents in Colorado who are there longer than five years, the costs can exceed $330,000. The good news is Coloradans have access to long-term care options and solutions. One in five single women aged 65 and above lives in poverty. And nearly 40% of older women living alone depend on Social Security for nearly all of their income. In fact, more than half of them would be living in poverty if not for their Social Security benefits.
